Pioneering figure of Iran’s modern art movement, Jazeh Tabatabaei was a multidisciplinary artist whose playful, symbolic imagery and metal sculpture works reshaped Iranian contemporary art. He was also a prolific poet and playwright.

Early Life and Background

  • Studied theater and fine arts at the University of Tehran

  • Founded the Modern Iran Art Gallery in Tehran in 1961, a landmark for contemporary Iranian art

  • Known for assembling fantastical sculptures from machine parts and scrap metal
