Jalal Shabahangi was a multidisciplinary Iranian artist celebrated for his minimalist desertscapes, abstract visual language, and pioneering work in glass sculpture. As a painter, designer, and educator, his influence extended across generations of Iranian contemporary artists.

Early Life and Background

  • Born in Iran and studied visual arts in Tehran

  • Earned a Master's degree in Graphic Design and Painting from San Jose State University in 1967

  • Returned to Iran and joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran in 1968

  • Taught for more than three decades, mentoring numerous artists

  • Known for his work in painting, sculpture, and glass-blowing, blending traditional themes with modern techniques

  • Studied glass-making in Murano, Italy, and introduced contemporary glass sculpture to the Iranian art scene

  • Exhibited widely in Iran and internationally, with works shown in solo and group exhibitions

  • Member of the Iranian Academy of Arts

  • Passed away in August 2023
