Jalal Shabahangi was a multidisciplinary Iranian artist celebrated for his minimalist desertscapes, abstract visual language, and pioneering work in glass sculpture. As a painter, designer, and educator, his influence extended across generations of Iranian contemporary artists.
Born in Iran and studied visual arts in Tehran
Earned a Master's degree in Graphic Design and Painting from San Jose State University in 1967
Returned to Iran and joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran in 1968
Taught for more than three decades, mentoring numerous artists
Known for his work in painting, sculpture, and glass-blowing, blending traditional themes with modern techniques
Studied glass-making in Murano, Italy, and introduced contemporary glass sculpture to the Iranian art scene
Exhibited widely in Iran and internationally, with works shown in solo and group exhibitions
Member of the Iranian Academy of Arts
Passed away in August 2023
