In 1939, he graduated from the Tehran Academy of Fine Arts. He left his studies at the Academy of Decorative Arts unfinished and in 1961, he went to France permanently to participate in the Second Paris Biennale. He held his first solo exhibition at Reza Abbasi Hall. In 1962, he won an award at the Third Tehran Biennale. His works have been exhibited in various countries, and in 2001, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art held an exhibition of his works. Zanderoudi's first works were surrealist paintings. While studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, he made a religious curtain using linocut printing. He paid attention to the visual symbols of popular and religious culture and created works called "Saqakhaneh". In Europe, he became acquainted with the Letterism movement and practiced calligraphy by repeating letters and words in monochrome or colored combinations. In another period, he filled the surfaces of his work with a multitude of numbers and small words, blurring the line between calligraphy and painting. During some of his career periods, Zenderudi has produced works using the hand-printed method.
Along with Parviz Tanavoli, he is considered one of the most important figures of the Saqakhaneh school, although in an interview with the Tandis biweekly he denies this connection with the school and considers Saqakhaneh to be synonymous with his name. In 1972, Hossein Zenderoudi published an exquisite Quran with colorful designs by the "Book Club" publishing house in Paris, which was awarded the "Most Beautiful Book in the World Book Year" award by UNESCO. Hossein Zenderoudi's works are kept in several museums. Three decades after the revolution, Homa Gallery first exhibited the artist's works in various collections. Among these periods, the exhibition of Zenderoudi's seal series in this gallery in collaboration with Fereydoun Aw can be mentioned. The British Museum held a commemoration in honor of the artist in May 2013, with a lecture by Vanya Porter.
Zenderoudi's painting style
From the beginning, Hossein Zenderoudi created his paintings with numbers and letters and their repetition. The four elements of water, earth, wind, and fire are considered in his works. French art critic Jean-Claude Carrier believes: "Stepping into Zenderroudi's works means leaving the forms and environment in which we normally live.
